Brian Mitchell  RSMA

art gallery devon

A native of St. Ives, Brian is a consummate painter whose skill is far reaching. Growing up in this beautiful West Cornwall town in the 1940's and 1950's provided him with all the inspiration any artist could wish for. This was an era when the abstract works with which the town is now associated were first seen in the local studios and galleries. However, Brian chose to follow the example of an earlier generation of painters in Cornwall, with work based on direct observation, 'en plein air'. After completing his art school training he spent five years teaching in the Midlands, but like most Cornish 'exiles' he was drawn back to St. Ives as soon as the opportunity arose. He now lives and works in a home that nestles on the cliff edge bathed in that magnificent north light for which the town is so famous, painting full time.

Brian is comfortable painting in many mediums and is also able to adopt different styles when the mood takes him. With a canny eye for detail due in no small part to the fact that he often executes his works in-situ he brings a life and vivacity to his works using vivid pigments that capture the natural beauty of nature.

He is a Member of the Royal Society of Marine Painters and was awarded the Society's Pears Prize. His work has been shown in exhibitions of the Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, Royal West of England Academy and the Society of Landscape Painters.
