James Brereton

James Brereton was born in 1954 in Derby where he went on to study art at the Joseph Wright Art School.

During the 1970s he endured a job in the gas industry painting as a hobby. Finally in 1979 he established himself sufficiently to be able to turn professional as an artist and live comfortably from the proceeds.

Although he painted many scenes in his early career, after a stint sailing on the Sea Training School schooner the Sir Winston Churchill he settled on marine as his genre of choice.

Influenced by the greats of this specialized field of painting, he draws influence from the likes of Thomas Summerscales and Montague Dawson. Notable for his exhaustive attention to detail and love of the vessels, under sail and steam, of yesteryear, James is a leader in his field.

Having shown at the Mall Galleries, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and at many other private galleries in London, we are very proud to now welcome him to Totnes!
