Scott Koban

London born Scott Koban's art is about light, luminosity, one of two sources, sun, moon. He started painting oils at sixteen, walking across French fields to his studio, with a soup can, to immerse himself in Surrealism. He credits Salvador Dali for his influence. This was to change significantly years later when Scott was recruited to join the Matte Department, painting on glass for the motion picture Star Wars, at Walt Disney studios in Burbank. This introduction to Special Effects and movie design took him to Detroit, creating sets for the automotive industry advertising, and a pop musical for Aretha Franklin.

His vision of a Gotham City for a Batman movie followed. One painting measured one hundred feet long. He was given three days. This physical and mental creative challenge was key to continue surviving severe trauma that started in childhood. His 100ft dark Gothic painting (acrylics) was a success, giving Scott confidence to accept a bigger challenge: design a rock musical next to the Kremlin, for star Laima Vaikule.

He returned briefly to the light of the Arizona desert, where his love of classical realist landscape painting began.

Scott now lives in Devon, recently completing the first in a series of Dartmoor oil paintings, while teaching himself the ancient techniques of Imprimatura / Bistre and Chiaroscuro, the dramatic use of lighting contrast for greater depth, atmosphere and realism.

Scott attended the Brighton Art College, the Beaux Arts de Nice. His awards include sharing the CCA and Lurzers Archiv for movie design with Austrian director Michael Bindlechner.  Scott’s collectors are numerous, and his work features in high profile collections on both sides of the Atlantic.
