After working for some years as a graphic designer and illustrator, Julian has, for the last decade, returned to his formative and most creative roots as a fine artist. Years of experimentation and refinement have resulted in his mature style which is now sought after nationally and internationally by an ever growing number of collectors. His work hangs privately and in galleries across the UK, Europe and the US.
His medium is oils and while retaining his figurative constancy, Julian draws out his signature abstractions in brush and knife (and finger) marks on the finer scale as well as in blocks of tonal harmony on the larger.
His recognition of light and the intense emotions that it imbues is obvious whether expressed across the small figure playing in the sun-spangled surf, the slant of evening rays through the high street window or the heaving storm charging a huge landscape. Above all, it is his intention to discover the "Genius Loci " or soul of a place or scene. What makes time stop. What we then carry with us as perfect moments.
Julian frequently takes commissions and has been called upon to fill whole houses with his work.
He recognises the value of working briskly to generate energy within a painting but also the importance of sometimes leaving a painting on one side to mature in the mind for a while before continuing with it. You will often see the remains of earlier workings showing through his finished pieces forming a kind of under-texture as te1ament to his willingness to reject imperfection and his drive to exceed anything he has previously painted.
"The most exciting work may be accomplished in hours, the mon satisfying may take weeks."
